THE MATILDAS AND TEAMWORK

When you’re playing a team sport, any team sport, not just football, teamwork is the most important thing. Working together, rather than as individuals, is what it’s all about, and the support you get from your teammates, as well as the support you give them, is the most rewarding and enjoyable part of any team sport. Knowing that my teammates are always there, watching my back and supporting me on and off the pitch, is the best feeling ever.

If you’re part of a fantastic team, like I am so lucky to be, the people you play with become so much more than just teammates. They become your best friends. So many of the amazing experiences I’ve had over the years with my friends and teammates are the ones I’ll remember for the rest of my life, long after I’ve retired from playing football. I’ve learned so much from the people I’ve played with out on the pitch, but I’ve also had a great time with them off the field as well. My teammates and I love to make our training sessions fun. There are lots of jokes and laughter while we’re out there working hard, and when we’re competing against other teams, too.

The best thing about being part of a team is that you get to share your good times and the not-so-good times with each other, rather than dealing with it alone. I often think about how hard it must be sometimes to play a solo sport, such as tennis or boxing, when it’s just you out there front and centre. When things aren’t going so great and you’re losing matches, there’s no one to share the losses with and it’s just you alone who has to deal with how that feels. When you are part of a team, there is a very strong team spirit among everyone, which means that you can share all your achievements, and your failures, with each other. You celebrate the wins and commiserate the losses, and the more difficult times, together.

Since I’ve become captain of the Matildas, my main focus has been on keeping that team spirit alive and making sure that the bond we’ve all created with each other stays as solid as ever. Although this kind of leadership role means that I have more responsibility, and that I have to be more demanding of my team at times, I still try to be a good role model for my teammates and make them feel like they can talk to me about anything that’s worrying them. Sometimes it’s a hard balance to achieve, but I always try my best.
